Who is Rishi Sunak?

Rishi Sunak, 42-year-old son of Indian immigrants, UK’s first British Asian prime minister and the youngest for more than 200 years. He went on to become Prime Minister of UK on 25th October, 2022, when Liz Truss resigned from UK PM position after facing backlashes for her party policies in 45 days, since she was appointed.

He won this Tory leadership contest after his rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure enough supports from the MPs. After Liz Truss – tax-cutting agenda Mr. Sunak marked and predicted it as “fairy-tale economics” and her plan to borrow money during an inflation crisis would only lead the UK economy into chaos. He was born on 12 May 1980 in Southampton General Hospital in Southampton, Hampshire, to Southeast African-born Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi descent, Yashvir and Usha Sunak. His grandparents migrated with their families to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. Rishi Sunak is the eldest of three siblings. Sanjay, his brother (born 1982), is a psychologist and Raakhi Williams his sister (born 1985), works in New York as the chief of strategy and planning at the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies.

  • Sunak is a British politician who is appointed as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 25 October 2022 and Conservative Party Leader since 24 October 2022. Sunak was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015.
  • Rishi Sunak studied philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at Lincoln College, Oxford, and received MBA degree from Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar. He met his future wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy of Infosys in Stanford University.

  • On March 11, 2020, Rishi Sunak first budget was presented, which included £30 billion in additional spending, £12 billion of which was designated for mitigating the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in UK.
  • As a result of the financial consequences of the pandemic, Chancellor Sunak’s mitigation plans were criticized, as many workers were failed to qualify for the Treasury’s income support measures. According to the Institute for Employment Studies, 100,000 people may be ineligible for government assistance because they started a new job too late to be included in the job retention scheme and the British Hospitality Association stated the Treasury Select Committee that between 350,000 and 500,000 workers in its sector were not eligible for this scheme.
