Basketball’s history begins in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Basketball is the only sport that originated entirely in the United States. It was invented by James Naismith, a doctor and teacher, and has grown from a youth sport to large adult associations. Basketball is now a large part of American culture and has produced some of the world’s most famous athletes.

James Naismith is widely regarded as the inventor of basketball. He was born in Ontario, Canada, and spent his childhood studying theology. While studying, he participated in a variety of sports and excelled at all of them. By the age of thirty, Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Naismith was tasked with putting together a game for the students to play indoors during the winter. He didn’t want the game to be too physical or grueling, just something to keep the boys active during the winter. He incorporated elements from American football, soccer, and hockey.
He divided the students into two teams of nine, with the goal of getting the ball into their team’s basket. It was rowdy and violent the first time it was played. Then, since those players enjoyed the game, Naismith devised 13+ rules to make it more interesting and less rowdy. Since then we have seen Basket Ball Game getting advanced with time.
The very first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York, on January 20, 1892, with nine players. The game ended at 1–0; the shot was made from 25 feet (7.6 m), on a court just half the size of a present-day Streetball or National Basketball Association (NBA) court.
