• Conscription in South Korea has existed since 1957 and it says, all able-bodied South Korean men between age 18 – 36 years are required to serve in the military for 18 to 21 months in order to maintain the country’s ability to defend itself against a possible attack by North Korea, with which it is technically still at war.

• Olympic and Asian Games medallists, as well as prize-winning classical musicians and dancers, have received exemptions or been permitted to perform alternative public service. Seong-jin Cho, the first Korean pianist to win the International Chopin Piano Competition, and Tottenham footballer Son Heung-min, who won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, are among them.

• Some South Korean lawmakers supported the exemption, despite concerns that it would invite accusations of favouritism, particularly among other young men who have no choice but to serve.

• Refusing to serve in the military is a crime in South Korea, and it can result in imprisonment and social stigma, as actor and singer Steve Yoo discovered when he was deported and barred from entering the country, after he avoided joining military and became US citizen in 2002.
