One must wonder why this world cup format started and how? Here are the answers.

This T-20 format has a long history of emergence. As once The Benson & Hedges Cup was a one-day cricket competition for first-class counties in England and Wales that was played from 1972 to 2002, and it was one of cricket’s longest sponsorship deals.

The first official Twenty20 matches were played on June 13, 2003, between the English counties in the Twenty20 Cup, and the very first season of Twenty20 in England was a huge success. The first Twenty20 match held at Lord’s, on July 15, 2004 between Middlesex and Surrey, captivated a crowd of 27,509, the largest crowd for any county cricket game at the ground other than a one-day final since 1953.

After the Benson & Hedges Cup playoff ended in 2002, the ECB wanted to have a replacement for this one-day competition. In response to dwindling crowds and reduced sponsorship, cricket officials sought to increase the game’s popularity among the younger generation. It was designed to make fast-paced, exciting, jaw dropping cricket available to thousands of fans who had been put off by longer versions of the game that is 50-50. In 2001, Stuart Robertson, the ECB’s marketing manager, proposed a 20-over-per-innings game to county chairmen, who voted 11-7 in favor of adopting the new format.
